Dear Nancy,
Thanks for yours. I thought you might like the enclosed TLS
page. Everything it says strikes me as utter gibberish. But there
does seem to emerge a glimmering of definition; belief means that one
knows everything without evidence and theology means that with
evidence no one knows anything. Belief gives everyone different
certainties; theology, the same uncertainty. The latter conveys an
illusion of communion or sharing, which makes it very popular. But
all that is actually being held in common, it seems to me, is
confusion. I hope you're going to clear all this up. When the time is
ripe, that is.
